The Yukon Tavern’s reputation as a haven for movie fans has taken on a life of its own! Our movie nights have been the inspiration for bars as far away as Chicago, Illinois, who are making movie nights a regular event.
The Yukon’s idea to bring a night of cinema to our Southeast Portland neighborhood has provided the roadmap Mike Vanderbilt used for the same type of event at Chicago’s Cigars and Stripes. Vanderbilt, a website editor and writer for the movie review website Daily Grindhouse, has used our movie night as a model for his “Monster Meatball Movie Night.” It’s a big event Chicago-style barbeque joint, comprised of a horror movie double feature and a menu that includes a smoked meatball sandwich—well worth the trip to Chi-town! (And if you don’t believe me, check out the photos on their Facebook page).
Vanderbilt shares the same love of gruesome effects and unrealistic tragedy seen in the monster genre as our past host of “Suds and Cinema,” Mac Bell. The two met through Daily Grindhouse, where Mac was a co-founder, and for years they shared their love of cult movies online.
We see our Yukon crowds enjoying the movies we show each month and know that the crowd in Chicago will have just as much fun watching Vanderbilt’s.
So, all of us Yukon Tavern movie fans want to give a shout out to the movie fans at the Cigar and Stripes of Chicago, Illinois as they sit down to their monster movie classics!
