A Few of My Favorite Things About the Yukon Tavern

The Yukon Tavern holds a special place in my heart. It’s casual vibe, it’s great food, drinks, and service, and it’s long history as a historical marker in its Southeast Portland neighborhood. Well, I’ll soon be moving to a new city and leaving the many things I love about this “dive” bar.

These are just a few of the things I’ll miss most about the Yukon Tavern.

The Food and Drink

You can always count on a delicious juicy burger made from fresh ingredients and stacked high inside a fresh bun. Biting into one of these makes me smile every time. I’ll also miss the great drinks served at the Yukon. No matter what I choose to drink, I know it will be mixed with pride and served with a smile by one of the Yukon’s skilled bartenders. One of my favorites is the CBD drink Abliss Lemon Ginger. The chefs and bartenders go above and beyond to keep their customers happy, and that philosophy is proven time and again in the food and drinks they serve.

Events All Month Long

The Yukon hosts a variety of events throughout the month. From movies, to bands, to poker; whatever the interest, the Yukon’s calendar will have something for you. I attended my first mobile painting class at the Yukon and now I am a regular painter at home. Now they’ve added live music every week and I’m sorry I’ll have to miss out hearing all the great bands filling their calendar.

Yukon - Holiday Hideaway4

The People

Most of all I will miss the easy vibe and welcoming atmosphere I always found at the Yukon. I toasted friends, shared baskets of fries with friends, and joked with friends across the table. And, across the bar. The bartenders always make you feel like you belong there as they buzz around making sure everyone is having a great time.

Yukon - NFL Breakfast3

While I’ll miss the Yukon after I’m gone, I’ll look forward to the day when I return to enjoy the good food and drinks, friends and fun that I find at the Yukon Tavern.

Our Atmosphere

“A True American-They call it a dive bar?? It’s far from being a dive, it’s great, we had a great time with the friendly locals, and the staff are awesome! They really know how to mix the drinks. We had bar food, which was cooked quickly and very well, and we visited there a lot while on holiday. It is the place to be—with their shuffleboard table, poker nights and various channels on their TV’s they cater for everyone it’s worth a visit.”

Our Food

“Yukon does it right. Booze is ludicrously cheap here and it is a first rate dive bar. What can you say to a plate of better-than-your-expectations biscuits and gravy for $6.00? Load me up! That’s what you say!”

Meet Ashley McGarr, the Yukon Tavern’s New Manager

Yukon - Ashley McGar.JPGNearly six months ago, when word went out that the Yukon Tavern was looking for a new manager, the decision to become part of the new Yukon team was an easy one for Ashley McGarr. She’d been a part of our Southeast Portland neighborhood for long enough to feel at home in our neighborhood “dive” bar and she wanted to play a part in ushering in a new era at our historic bar.

Ashley has spent twenty years behind a bar pouring drinks for people she counts as friends all throughout the city. Over the last year she’s been serving the Yukon Tavern’s crowd and when owners, Rainer Wieland and Jon Batcheller, approached her about moving into a management position she jumped at the chance. Now she’s using that experience to manage the bar and create the mouthwatering menus that we all get to enjoy every day. Her personal favorites on that menu? The ooey, gooey Grilled Cheese with Bacon sandwich, the recently added, Pot Stickers, and the mixed drinks she concocts with the top shelf liquor stocked behind the bar.

Being right in the middle of the changes happening at the bar gives her a bird’s eye view to the great updates going on. Fresh paint, a new floor, and more events than ever are bringing in fresh faces, and Ashley loves meeting all the new people.

The Yukon is a classic dive bar that is evolving with the neighborhood. I love welcoming the people that have called it their second home for years as much as the people who are just beginning to make it their regular gathering spot.

-Ashley McGarr

Stop by the Yukon Tavern soon and say hello to our new manager, Ashley McGarr. You’ll find her serving up beer behind the bar, frying up our Yukon Gold Waffle Fries in the kitchen, or chatting up one of her many friends at the bar.
