Come Watch Super Bowl LI with Us at the Yukon Tavern

For football fans everywhere, this Sunday is the culmination of a season of highs and lows, excitement and disappointment, and lots and lots of action. At the Yukon Tavern we’re going tailgating the last big game of the year with all our Sellwood neighborhood friends.

greeley-super-bowlThis Sunday, the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, the NFL’s two best teams, will take to the field in Houston to see who gets the Super Bowl LI championship ring. Both teams have steamrolled the competition on their way to the top, led by star quarterbacks Matt Ryan for the Falcons and Tom Brady for the Patriots, who’s going for his fifth Super Bowl win.

We’re broadcasting the game on our televisions around the bar and, of course, we have a full menu with your favorite stadium food, including our roster of hot dogs. Our rotating taps will feature the best in domestic and craft beers, and our specials of the day are chicken and fries and, of course, the “Shot of the Day” special; Pendleton Whiskey.

Brrr! It’s Cold Out There!

Has anyone else gotten tired of this deep freeze we’re living in? I know I have, so I think I’m just going to ride out the rest of week inside my favorite neighborhood bar, Southeast Portland’s Yukon Tavern.

I’ll order a beer and find a spot at the bar. Maybe there’ll be a game on. The Yukon’s got TVs placed around the bar so everyone can be front and center for NFL playoff games going on this month.

There’s always something happening at the Yukon. Open Mic Nights, Texas Hold ‘em, Geeks Who Drink, Vine and Pallet painting, and free pool on Sundays. Everyone can find something they love all week long.

According to rumors, the Yukon has the longest shuffleboard table in Portland and the challenge to drink a beer before your launched puck stops at the other end of the table is one I can’t resist!

I always find a few friends at the Yukon Tavern. The neighborhood has changed over the last few years and the Yukon has changed right along with it, without losing the charm of a typical neighborhood bar. The new owners, Rainer and Jon, have updated the interior and the menu, with great bar food standards and a line of hot dogs that you won’t find anywhere else in Portland.

If you find yourself getting overwhelmed by too much weather and you want to break out of the confines of your home for a day, drive down Milwaukee Avenue in Southeast Portland and look for the Yukon’s iconic neon sign. Our doors will be open and our kitchen and bar will be well stocked to get you through the winter blues, alongside your friends in the friendliest neighborhood bar in Sellwood!

8-Ball
The traditional style of play assigns players either striped or solid colored balls after the first shot is made. The first player to pocket all their balls and the 8-ball last is declared the winner. If a player shoots the 8-ball in before their last shot, the game ends and whoever shot it in loses.

9-Ball
In this game the pool balls are numbered 1 through 9. Players must sink each ball in numerical order into the six pockets until they reach the 9-ball. It’s a fast game that is usually played in a series of three quick rounds.

Straight Pool
This is the formal style of pool where players call their shots, and there is the option to a set score like 50 or 100. Any ball can be shot in at any time by any player, and player receives a point for every ball they get in. At the end of three to five games whoever has the most points wins.

Horse
You’ve played it on a basketball court, now play it at the Yukon! In the pool version of the popular game players rotate as they try to sink the balls into the pockets in the exact way the preceding player did it, and if they fail they receive a letter. The first player to spell “HORSE” loses. This can also be played as the shorter “Pig” version. Seems like a great game to bet a plate of Pulled Pork Sliders on.

3-Ball
In the game of 3-Ball players set up (you guessed it!) just three balls and the player has to shoot them in using the least amount of shots possible. Another player must match or beat that number of shots or they lose. This can be played with multiple players, which, as you can imagine, increases the difficulty quite a bit. Maybe this game calls for a shot of whiskey.

Yukon - Pool Table

At the Yukon Tavern in Southeast Portland you can play one or all these games for free every Sunday. So come in, rack up, and challenge your friends to one of the most beloved and challenging games found in a bar!
